Eco News #5 – colour of the bird’s beak indicates its health

May 24th, 2012

Hi Greenzoners! 🙂
Did you know that the colour of a bird’s beak shows if it’s healthy or not? 😉

stork

It concerns only female birds – the more colourful beak is, the healthier and stronger the bird is, which is an indicator to any attackers, invaders and predators.
It was discovered by Dr. Troy Murphy, and he said “It helps other bird decide if it should attack or run. If run – then, how fast it should run.”
The colour is determined by immoglobulin antibodes,  a component of the immune system of a bird.
Murphy adds that it doesn’t work for male birds, so it indicates that the colour of a beak is connected to the gender roles in the nature.
Also, sums up, that the songs that the birds are singing, colour of the beak and behaviour is vital in scaring off predators and opposite sex interactions. 🙂

Isn’t it interesting? But what would happen if male bird would stick his beak into the bucket of paint? Well… we hope they won’t try it. 😉
