Eco News #6 – plants respond to the global warming

June 5th, 2012

Did you, Greenzoners, know how environment responses to the climate changes?
There was a new scientific breakthrough in recent studies concerning global warming. Plants, especially flowers, were considered “stable” and non-reacting to the global warming. Recently though, researchers at UC Santa Barbara’s National Center for Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) discovered, that flowers are actually affected by slowly progressing global warming.

They ran an experiment, in which 490 of species were tested for their reaction to temperature changes.  10%-18% needed a lowering of temperature to develop properly. Because of warmer winters, flowers were blooming with a delay, and, because of that, they had to flower faster during earlier spring.

Scientists say that it is important for conservationist, as it is great proof about environment’s response to the climate changes.

So,  plants are developing differently because of global warming. What do you think about it, Greenzoners? We wait for your opinions in comments!
