EcoNews: Winter is coming

October 13th, 2013

Hello GreenZoners,

we already know what is going on with leaves when autumn comes, but Mother Nature has more secrets connected with autumn and winter. What do animals do when wheather gets colder?

There are few ways to deal with the winter weather.

1. Migrate – option for animals who like traveling. Many birds migrate in the winter. It is dangerous, so mostly they are doing it in large flocks. Birds can fly very long distances:  the Arctic tern nests close to the Nort Pole in the summer. In autumn it flays all the way to Antarctica. Each spring returns north again.

2. Adapt. Some animals must adapt to the changing weather. To keep warm, animals may grow new, thicker fur in the fall. Food is hard to find in the winter, so some animals, like squirrels, gather extra food in the fall and store it to eat later.

3. Hibernate. Special, very deep sleep. Bears, skunks, some bats are doing it. A lot of people are dreaming about it:).

4. Something else. Mother Nature had a lot of different ideas for animals – some of them are looking for special shelter. Some insects die after laying eggs in the fall. The eggs hatch into new insects in the spring and everything begin all over agian.

What is your best way to deal with cold weather?
