EcoDictionary: biodegradation

August 21st, 2013

Hello GreenZoners,

do you know how long does it take to decompose paper towel? 2-4 weeks. Leather shoes? 25-40 years. Plastic bag? 100-1000 years. Scary?

Very scary! What can we do with it? We can choose biodegradable trash bags and other biodegradable things.

Yes, it is a time for new important word;).

Biodegradation is the chemical dissolution of materials by bacteria or other biological factors. Also light, water and and air are important part of this process.

Simply means to be consumed by microorganisms and return to compounds found in nature.

Very eco-friendly! Unfortunately, products that contain biodegradable matter and non-biodegradable matter are often marketed as biodegradable. Be careful!
