EcoNews: Love is in the air!

August 6th, 2013

Last post on our blog was about friendship, today we have something even more advanced: loyalty in the world of mammals. Male mammals don’t stay monogamous just to have and protect offspring. They do it because of love, to protect their partner – that is the result of the newest research of scientists from Cambridge University. Interesting?

Previous theories have suggested that animals are monogamous just to protect their kids from being killed. Now researchers from Camridge University believe that the main reason a male will choose a lifelong partner is to keep her safe – the choices of suitable mates are slim. Cambridge scientists studied 2,500 animals.

Despite explaining the process of how mammals become monogamous, the study does not provide insights into when and why monogamy evolved in humans.
